I have always thought that a new lawn adds a lot of value to your home but now I know its a fact….

I came across this article from the Herald Sun yesterday and it just confirmed what I had always thought….

It read: Most Aussies want real grass in their backyard and most Australians are prepared to shell out an extra $75,000 for a great looking lawn as stated from national surveys. Turf agents throughout Australia have figured that a great looking lawn around the house could add up to $83,000 on a $440,000 home. Melbourne home owners could pay almost $80,000 more on an average $420,000 home for a patch of great looking grass. The survey of 114 agents conducted that in Victoria 19% of the total home value is for the great looking lawn around around the place, in N.S.W 16%, QLD and S.A 12% and Western Australia 8%.

So if you are about to sell your house and you want to get top dollar for it,consider investing in some beautiful, green, grass…

A great idea when you are thinking of purchasing a new lawn for the first time is to make up a garden plan on a piece of graph paper. It does not have to look professional as long as it is to scale and it makes sense to you.

Some things to consider when planning your garden is:

How much sun versus shade do you have in your garden?

What type of soil do you have?

Do you have pets or kids that will be using this space on a regular basis?

How is your backyard used by you and your family?

What are council requirements in your area for hard and soft surfaces?( Council requirements generally give more credits for lawns, as they absorb water which in turn puts less pressure on the storm water systems)

Mowing ,general maintenance and available water can influence your turf choice as some varieties are more demanding than others.

Once your plan is completed it makes it a lot easier to work out how much turf, plants materials etc that you will need if drawn to scale. You can even add some colour to the plan to help you clarify the different ares in your garden and this will also make it easier to read.

Make sure you get in your yards as soon as you are able to, to give your lawns a trim as you do not want your lawn getting too long.

We go over the ground with a roller to get rid of all the lumps and bumps so when it comes time to cut it the machine does not struggle. This rolling process also helps pushes the chopped up grass into the ground a little more.

This picture shows how when we cut the Kings Pride Buffalo we leave little strips behind so the turf comes back quicker for the next harvest. If we did not leave these strips behind the turf would not grow back. With other varieties like Kikuyu and couch we do not have to leave the strips behind as these varieties are vigorous growers and come back quickly anyway without leaving any strips behind.

We feed the turf rolls into the yellow machine and then the machine(turf planter) has sharp blades inside that cuts the rolls up in pieces and then the cut up pieces fall into the ploughed up ground.
