Transform Your Yard: The Ultimate Guide to Preparing for Perfect Turf!
Creating a lush, green lawn starts with proper preparation. Here’s a detailed guide to help you get your area ready for laying turf:
1. Assess and Plan
- Measure the Area: Determine the size of the area where you plan to lay turf. This helps in ordering the right amount of turf. You should plan to order 5–10% extra turf rolls to account for wastage and miscalculations: Simple areas: For rectangular areas, order 5% extra. Complex areas: For more irregular areas, order 10% extra
- Choose the Right Turf: Select a turf variety that suits your climate, soil type, and sunlight conditions. We recommend our popular options in Sydney include DNA Certified Sir Walter Buffalo, Sir Grange Zoysia, Tiftuf Bermuda, Eureka Kikuyu and Nullarbor Couch.
2. Clear the Area
- Remove Existing Vegetation: Eliminate any existing grass, weeds, or plants. You can use a non-selective herbicide or manually remove them.
- Debris Removal: Clear away rocks, sticks, and other debris that could interfere with turf establishment.
3. Soil Preparation
- Test the Soil: Conduct a soil test to check pH levels and nutrient content. Most turf grasses prefer a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
- Amend the Soil: Based on the soil test results, add necessary amendments like lime to adjust pH or compost to improve soil structure and fertility.
- Loosen the Soil: Use a rototiller to loosen the soil to a depth of about 6 inches. This helps roots penetrate more easily.
4. Level the Area
- Grade the Soil: Ensure the soil surface is even and slopes away from buildings to prevent water pooling. Use a rake to smooth out any high or low spots.
- Firm the Soil: Lightly compact the soil using a roller or by walking over it. This provides a stable base for the turf.
5. Install Irrigation (Optional)
- Lay Irrigation Lines: If you plan to install an irrigation system, do so before laying the turf. This ensures even watering and promotes healthy growth.
6. Fertilize the Soil
- Apply Starter Fertilizer: Spread a starter fertilizer over the prepared soil to provide essential nutrients for the new turf. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates. We sell a Lawn Launcher which is a starter fertiliser that is applied underneath the turf on top of the topsoil. It assists in retaining water with it’s moisture magnets crystals for vital root establishment. We sell a 3kg bucket for $40 which covers 100m2. 900g bucket is available as well for $25 which covers 30m2.
7. Lay the Turf
- Start Laying Turf: Begin at a straight edge, such as along a driveway or sidewalk. Lay the turf in a brick-like pattern, staggering the seams.
- Tight Seams: Ensure the edges of the turf pieces are tightly butted together to avoid gaps.
- Cut to Fit: Use a sharp knife to trim the turf around curves, trees, and other obstacles.
8. Watering
- Initial Watering: Water the newly laid turf thoroughly to help it settle and start rooting. Keep the soil consistently moist for the first few weeks.
- Regular Watering: After the initial period, water deeply but less frequently to encourage deep root growth.
9. Rolling the Turf
- Firm the Turf: Use a roller to press the turf into the soil, ensuring good root-to-soil contact. This helps the turf establish more quickly.
10. Maintenance
- First Mow: Wait until the turf reaches about 3 inches in height before the first mow. Cut no more than one-third of the grass height at a time.
- Ongoing Care: Continue regular watering, mowing, and fertilizing to maintain a healthy lawn.
By following these steps, you’ll create a strong foundation for your turf, ensuring it thrives and provides a beautiful, green lawn. Do you have any specific questions about any of these steps? Call us on our Free call number 1800 757 658
